Technically yes you can but it can take several weeks to clear and the charge is likely to be between £7 and £12 depending on the bank. if you do hold more than one account try phoning each bank and asking about their charges and clearing time before you decide where to bank it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Barclays website says to contact the branch for fees.
Used to deal with US$ cqs from clients at work, and charges were from £7-£50 (some were big cqs though) , plus there is also the exchange rate different from date of cq being written and being cleared to take into account.0 -
Try auctionchex.comMy TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Yes you can, if you can afford it! I had a buyer in US recently send me a dollar cheque for the Sterling amount(doh!) therefore half what required, and the cost to change into £ was more than the value!....:T0

hi I used to work at Barclays, so hope this helps.
You can pay the cheque in on a currency form, depending on the type of account you hold you can choose to have the account credited upon receipt (negotiation) by the processing centre, they will then collect the funds (if the cheque is unpaid they will then debit your account, this can take 4-7 weeks). Or they can do it where they pay you once they have actually obtained the funds from the payees bank. (collection)
The charge varies depending on the value of the payment. I think the minimum charge is about £8 unless it has change since i left, if the cheque is high value it can be costly.0 -
Use auctionchex.com, as already suggested. It's by far the best value for small-value cheques.0

i paid a US doller cheque for $47 into lloyds an was not charged, about 3 months later i was at the counter paying in another one for $148 and the cashier told me i would be charged £10, i told her i wasnt last time so why was i this time, she started to argue with me that i must have been on the previous occasion but not noticed it.
anyway to cut a long story short i was never charged for either.WWSD(what would Scooby Doo)0 -
Just saw that auctionchex.com rates are not as good as they used to be - $2.30
£1.00.
My flatmate said that I could put a US cheque onto a PayPal account using an ATM and a PayPal debit card. Not sure if this is true... Can you load up a PayPal account with US dollar cheques?0 -
I paid a $ cheque in a few years ago for about $60. It cleared after 2 weeks, I sent the item.
6 weeks or so later I received a letter and the original cheque, telling me that the account the cheque was drawn from no longer existed. Amazingly, the buyer paid again in cash and was very apologetic, he had closed the account after I confirmed cheque cleared but neither of us realised it could take so much longer to "fully" clear.
I never took cheques after that.0
