Do you know when it was put on rightmove?
Could be that he put the property on the market in case he couldn't get a tenant or got a good quick offer, then you turned up to rent so he took it off but the EA hasn't updated rightmove yet (no incentive for them too hurry with that really).
Having the old tenants furniture in the pictures supports the theory that it was listed before you showed an interest.
I wouldn't get upset unless you can confirm that he is still trying to sell and I don't see a listing on rightmove as a reason for you to claim the deposit back.
Might be interesting to call the EA and say you're interestd in buying the flat and see what the response is.0
