abbey not playing the game

Am I within my rights to open a new bank account and have my salary and dds paid in and leave my Abbey account with 1p in credit, will they chase me for my overdraft to be paid?? I am sick of Abbey as they still owe me over 200 pounds for a frudulent transaction they allowed to be processed. 6 weeks after complaining I am still waiting, the branch manager ANN JOHNSON would not even speak to me to resolve the money owed to me. I resorted to standing in the bank and showing my displeasure in the middle of the bank. The CLIENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGER ANDY GARNET, then agreed to refund charges of 60 pounds that were taken when the fraudlent transaction went through my account. This was despite Abbey's reassurances that this would not happen. Anyone recommend a decent bank??? addtionally, I still was in possession of my card and pin number when the money was stolen via sweden. Ps yes you can have a multifunction card that access more than one account.

Hi Jeaniemax, welcome to MSE :)

As this post was on the end of a long thread, I've moved it into its own thread to the 'Budgeting & Current Accounts' board where you should get advice about a new current account. Take a look at the Best Bank Accounts article.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

So long as the account is either at 0 balance or in credit, they're not going to chase you. If you leave it at -200 (0 less the 200 they owe you) they may be slightly more annoyed. Other than that, there's nothing to stop you, but it's best to do it yourself rather than use any switching service your new bank provides (unless there's a monetary incentive to do so) as they have been known to screw things up.

HSBC are good. Try them instead. (I say it often, but it's true.)

I bank with Halifax - compare the best deals and what you feel you want from a bank...

You may leave the account wih 1p credit - it'll cost the bank more to manage the account, if you consider annual statement's, direct mail and so forth.. hehe

Surely if it's in credit, then there would be no overdraft to be paid off?
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
