Mouldy Bread

Options
Hi Guys.

Just looking for your opinions please.

My wife had a stay in a well known private hospital group a few weeks ago.We do not have insurance so paid ourselves. The cost (without consultants fees) for 1 night was £1360. I paid this upfront as is usual with these things. I went to collect my wife the morning after and went to her room as she was "finishing" her breakfast.Well she did drink the tea ,but left the toast.

The reason she left it was because it was mouldy all around the crust on both slices. We pointed it out to the staff nurse who was horrified and said she would make a report out about this. I got home and a couple of days later sent a letter to the hospital and now 20 days later have their reply.

They are sorry and have investigated it fully and will in future check dates on bread and change supplier etc etc. They guarantee this will never happen again and have offered us £150 as a goodwill gesture blah blah .

Would you accept this and move on or (considering the large amount charged for service £1300 ) expect more ?

mant thanks T.
Onwards and Upwards ;)

I would push for more. £150 just isn't enough to cover the personal distress and possible night terrors caused by a mouldy bit of toast.
Here I go again on my own....

I suppose the point of my post is principal. The cost of £1300 was for the overnight stay, hire of theatre and dressings but NOT the surgeon or anesthetist and also meals which amounted to mouldy toast as she could not eat the night before so soon after the op.

Yes it is the principle, and you have made your point to the people concerned they have investigated and offered you a token sum (£150) as recompense.

If it is just the principle just reject the £150 and be smug that you informed them of their misdemeanour.

What do you think they should do?
    .....

  • it may just be the principle, but even so i don't see how you can ask for more money off they have already given you over 10%. now if there had been mould in the theatre you would have cause for complaint but i presume there was an offer of replacement toast when the nurse found out. if it is in principle then maybe you should offer the £150 to the nurse who has actioned this complaint correctly and efficiently, and her helpers would be more vigilant if they were rewarded for spotting this kind of situation.;)

Nope no offer of replacement.the S.N. went to check and only the one/same loaf left. Agreed with her to "best not have more ".

Many thanks for all your replies.I was looking for opinions...and got them.
    cheers T.

£150 for a bit of mould?!? That's quite impressive! I'd accept it before they withdraw the offer.

I feel miffed I didn't get any mould on my toast when in the private hospital a couple of years ago. I react very badly to general anaesthetic (severe vomiting!!), and they wouldn't let me leave the hospital until I'd kept a meal down. I must've managed about 8 rounds of toast/sandwiches in 24 hours until I finally stopped puking them up. (I did tell the chef it was nothing personal and his food was fine). Just think, I could have had £150 x 8 = £1200!!!

TBH, private hospitals should concentrate on the medical side rather than the food... I'd have been more concerned at mouldy bandages rather than mouldy bread.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

That was very nice of you and I hope your wife recovers soon.

You know, we slag the NHS off for their food and so on, but it just goes to show, it's not just the NHS who have problems with their housekeeping staff.
