Natwest unfair charge

Hi Im new to posting on here but have been a member for a while and have found the website very helpful. Im not really sure where I stand on this I have a current account with natwest, which ive had for over 10 years, im fairly overdrawn at the moment (my limit is £3000) i knew i was getting close to the limit so stopped using my bank account, I knew what payments were due so payed some cash into the account to cover the outgoings, however unfortunatly unaware of this my partner bought something on ebay and payed via paypal, the payment was only £11.59 but this has taken my bank account over the £3000 overdraft limit, however when i checked my account today its £3149 overdrawn as natwest has charged me £114 for paypal taking out £11.59. Im apsoloutly fuming and really upset as I am trying my hardest to pay off my debts and £114 is alot of money to us especially for such a small amount. other then putting in a claim for unfair bank charges is there anything I can do I feel like going to the bank on tuesday and telling them where to shove their account. any advice would be really appreciated.

Do you have a breakdown of what type of charges make up the £114?

I thought they had to send you a letter before they took the money? Can't you go on online statements and see what it says next to each debit?

I received a letter from them on friday stating that I was being charged £28 for going over my agreed overdraft, yet they have taken £114. I went to the bank on tuesday to try to sort it out and they said that the charges were extremely high and that they would get my bank manager to ring me later that day and arrange a visit to sort it out and repay the over charge. However it is now saturday and I havnt heard a thing from them nor have they reimbursed me the over charged charge. The charge is only for one payment going over my agreed overdraft. I have downloaded the claim letter but at the moment really cant afford to wait months for the money to be repayed. I can deal with the £28 charge but not £114

Have you tried telephoning and saying you want to discuss some charges on your account?

Was the £114 taken in ONE transaction stating 'maintenance fee' or are there others? ie: 'Unpaid items' or paid referral fee or 'gtee card payment fee'? See: http://www.natwest.com/personal/day-to-day/current-accounts/g2/rates-charges.ashx for a breakdown of the different types and amounts of charges natwest can impose.

  • Hi there, i have recently ( November 07 ) made a claim against Nat West for £4,320 , i was contacted by the " Customers complaints" team within 3 days of them recieving my claim, they made me an offer of a one off £1500 payment ! i declined and reminded them that they can thank their lucky stars that under the current data protection act and legislation that i can only recieve 6 years worth of data, they actually put the phone down on me ! within 20 minutes i had another young lady contact me and make me a full offer of the claimed amount but on agreement that i did not add the 8% interest, i agreed and within a matter of days the full amount was paid into my Halifax account, was i happy or what, i belive because of the pending court cases with the OFT the banks have at the present time found a new and miss judged air of optimism. once they paid out one, they will pay another ? i did not even have to send them a schedule of highlighted charges that i did not agree with. Good luck .

Thank you for the natwest link, I have matched what i says on my bank statement and this is what it says

    <TABLE class=dataTable cellSpacing=0><TBODY><TR><TD colSpan=3>Unpaid Item Fee</TD></TR><TR><TD class=first>An Unpaid Item Fee will be payable if:
    • you informally request an overdraft by issuing instructions for a withdrawal or other payment; and
    • the payment cannot be met from the funds in your account or any unused arranged overdraft facility; and
    • we decide in our discretion not to make the payment.
However they have taken the £114 yet stated they were only taking one payment of £38. I have been to my branch twice and rang them 4 times but all they keep telling me is that They wont discuss it with me I have to see my branch manager. But surprise surprise the branch manager is never in the branch when i go there and they always say that they are going to get the branch manager to ring and make an appointment but he has never rang me back
</TD><TD vAlign=top>At the time we decide not to make the payment</TD><TD vAlign=top>£38 for each item (subject to a maximum of £114 per day)</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Call up any of the freephone numbers on Natwests site and say you want to talk to lending about a mistake with your charges.

Looks like they've levied 3 unpaid item fees not just one.
