Hi,

I keep getting this error when I try to install various software e.g. Windows Live Messenger , I've just formatted completely and reinstalled Vista, and not sure what is wrong?

The full message is:
There was a problem with the installation. Windows Live Suite was not installed. System error details
Code: 0x800736b1
Description: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log for more detail.

Thanks

Have you googled it? Looking at it it is probably a DLL problem. You need to find and examine the log file for more details as this could be one of 100's of issues.

I've tried google but there are various different long solutions, wasn't sure where to start!

seems this is linked to a req'd library Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
install that then run windows update see if that works

Problem is every time I run windows Update when I restart I get an error 0xc0000005 and something about winload.exe. , I have to run the repair on the installation cd, which fixes it, but the updates are undone, and if I update again then get the same issue..

So updating won't help, and despite installing it am still getting same error!

then without a "current version" of windows its a lost cause, get the windows update issue fixed first, will try and look into that if i get time

Sounds like you have a pretty bodged installation of Vista. I take it that it was installed from the original disks and all that?

What was the reason for the rebuild, similar problems?

Well weirdly the night before a whole load of folders vanished from my desktop, mostly downloaded stuff, but also a lot of IMPORTANT documents.. Noone else had deleted them and I couldn't figure out how it happened.. I'd been planning a clean start on the PC anyway for a while and that just convinced me to do it.. but now I can't install the most important programs !
