Hello!

Help required please! I just opened a letter from my gas & electricity supplier in which they have my name but wrong address and account numbers saying I owe them over a hundred pounds by 6/5/2008 or they'll be sending a debt collection agency round and it will affect my credit history - what can I do (other than panic slightly, which I have covered)? I was so worried I almost phoned to pay straight off, assuming an error on my part (difficult as I pay by direct debit) - really glad I checked my account number and saw the address mistake before I did.

I'm in a bit of a flap about this so any and all advice gratefully received.

(I have tried calling but their lines are closed - main worry is the bank holiday leaving me just one day to sort this)

The bills will have supply numbers (MPR for gas & MPAN for electricity) and meter serial numbers on them.
Compare the meter serial numbers with the ones on the meter in your house, and if you have your DD quarterly statement that will have the same.
When you call, have this info handy as it'll help them get to the bottom of the problem.
How did you get the bill if it has a different address?

    Hello,

thank you for your responses, I think it's all sorted - I phoned them and questioned it this morning, should be resolved with no debt collectors or credit history problems - relief! It was a bit of a panic though...

SwanJon - thank you for the good advice, it was really useful! I got the letter because it was addressed to the same number flat in the building opposite with my name on (they'd duplicated my record apparantly?) but I think the postie saw my name and put it in with my mail for my correct address, if that makes sense.

Anywho, thank you very much - I'm assured by the company that my account is fine and it won't affect my credit rating or anything :j

Good point, hadn't thought of that. I did take the names of the people I spoke with and made them put a note on my account, but will call them again in the morning - thanks!

If it's not a silly question, how did you receive the letter with the wrong address?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

Sorry bryanb - missed your message, and thanks Pixie28 :)

The letter should be with me in 10 days confirming all is sorted - relief!
