millionaire, if they were getting 1.5mbs on ipstream with BT, now full 8meg on llu, that suggests either they had a line fault, now rectified, or somebody is making assumptions, i'd guess at the latter

Why would I guess, theres no point me making figures up. Tested the speed via various speed test sites. All gave roughly the same speed.

The other reason I know what speed it was running was because I orginally set up broadband with BT and used it regualry as its my parents house.

I can see the speed difference when downloading stuff also.

The speed increases have happened on 2 different lines both which were with BT, now with Sky.

I know what Im doing, You should guess less.;)

    PMSL (at both suggestions)

scooter, check my exchange (link posted), if decent LLU was available I'd possibly go, though long contracts do worry me.

    :rotfl:

you might think its funny i don't cos i ain't got a choice:cry:, but if u got that exchange its your only choices according to that website samknows

in that case yoiu really have only 3 choices
1 avoid any downloading and watching videos online
2 contact them to "upgrade" your package
3 pay off your contract with bt and move to another company

mdbarber, I have lots of choices, a couple or carp LLU suppliers, or any of a multitude of IPstream ISPs, because of my usage I've chosen an ISP with a generous cap, with the trade-off that downloads can and do often slow down a bit after 10pm, if my usage was more conservative I'd be with another supplier, giving me more regular speeds, both of which offer 1 month contracts, so if the service falls below the high standards that I expect, I'll be off like a shot.

millionaire, 1.5mbs on a 'up to 8 meg' product suggests either a line fault, or a very long line, if the 1st, changing to llu (or changing home equipment) may fix it, if the 2nd it won't, what is the connection speed, attenuation and SNR as reported by the modem? On a long line adsl2 (+) may only give a slight increase in performance over adsl, the biggest gains (and the 16/24mbs) are for those living almost next to the exchange. I suppose another possibility is the original product was 2mbs fixed speed?!

I can't check the details as I have not got access to it at the moment, but I do think that someone at BT messed up the speed and limited it to 2mb. The exchange is quite close. Max 100 meters if that.

We had broadband at that property for years when the maximum availabe used to be 512mb, then it was 1mb and then 2mb.

After that when I was going to cancel and change to another provider they offered a discount on the monthly cost and said they would up it to the "up to 8Mb speed".

Obviously I got the discount but the speed never hit over 1.5-1.6mb average.

Only last week when I it got transferred to Sky the speed hit around 7900mb downstream on the speedtest sites.

I was so surprised at that I had to do the tests twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things :)

I did have a quick look on the router settings for the connection speed but Ive forgotton what exactly it was saying. Most likely around the 7964kbps or something like that.

millionaire, at 100m from the exchange I'd gladly swap houses! looks like they never did put you on the max product, sorry for thinking you were another idiot, but i'm usually right with that assumption ;)
