ipod touch. with upgrades or without? how to tell.

I have bought an ipod touch 16gb for my DH's birthday next month. I got it from ebuyer.
It arrived by post on Friday, in a cardboardbox, but there was NO paperwork in the box. The ipod box is sealed in cellophane, which I don't want to open as it is a gift.
How can I tell if I have been sent the ipod with the upgrades or not?

Thanks

    Two ways:
    1) Press the Play to turn it on. Navigate to Settings, About and then press the "advance/ff" twice and it'll list the version at the bottom. Press and hold play to turn it off again.
    2) Plug it into a computer with iTunes installed which will tell you what version it is.

Anyway, as they're freely downloadable and installable with iTunes, does it really matter?

I thought that you had to pay for the updates? If they are free, even better.
I have installed the itunes on our pc this morning, in readiness. (and hidden the icon, in case he wonders why we now have it!)

    Thanks

Whether or not the updates are pre-installed depends on the week the iPod was made.

If you have an iPod Touch made before the update was released, then you have to pay for the extra packages (well, legitimately anyway - the other way is to 'jailbreak').

Chances are if it's relatively new, it should already have the upgrade pre-installed.
