Setting up older PC on broadband

Hi all

I wonder if anyone can help me?

I have a laptop and an older PC (circa 2001) running on Windows Millenniem.

Currently I can only go on broadband on the laptop, because the PC doesn't have an ethernet port and AOL requires it to set up on that. (The PC is also right by the router so wold be best running on a cable.) Is there an adapter or anything I can get to make it work? It's a real nuisance as the printer is set up on the PC because the laptop will only take a USB connection.

Many thanks in advance,

PO xx

You can buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor or install a network card. Your biggest problem will be the operating system though.

Thanks for that.......so what should I do? I have the back-up disks for the laptop which runs on XP - would I be able to use that?

Or is it not really worth bothering?

You won't legitimately be able to install your xp on two machines...either you need to buy another copy, or how about picking up a very cheap second-hand pc with it already installed?? this may even cost you less than a new copy of xp if you hunt around...and could be a good source of spare parts !!

Assuming that XP is already legally on the desktop, there should not be an issue Provided there is proof that XP is licensed, which CD is used is irrelevant. In any case, all that is required here is drivers, AIUI.

Oops, my bad. Then you are stuck with ME. Your best bet is to get an ethernet card supporting ME. Probably a lot more likely to be successful than trying a USB to Ethernet adaptor.

There is no problem with setting up broadband on ME. As has already been said, all you need is an ethernet card for the PC. If you are not confident with installing one just take it to your local PC repair guy who should only charge around £20 for supply and fit.

However, if you are ok to do it yourself ( its not at all tricky!), send me your address and I'll pop an ethernet card in the post for you. I've got a few spares kicking around here.

thanks for the offer, but would not have the first clue how to install it myself!!

it does seem this might be the answer to the problem though!

    Thank you
