files vanished!

I just had a look on my desktop and a whole load of folders and files have vanished! They were there about an hour ago and since then noone else has used the computer and I haven't changed anything!

Any idea what it could be? There is over 100GB worth of stuff lost, some of it important revision notes!

The hard drive size has gone up 100GB as well.. I'm on Vista Home Premium.

    Very strange! Are you able to perform a search for an item you can remember that was on your desktop?

    Sounds obvious, but check the recycle bin - easy to forget when panicking about lost work! Also as suggested do a search for the known files - sometimes I have accidentally dragged files into a wrong folder by mistake and not noticed until later.

    Also check they were not stolen away by your antivirus software and quarantined.

    Try an 'undelete' program ASAP. The more you use the pc in the meantime, the less chance of recovering anything.

    right click your mouse on desktop and select "show desktop icons" in "arrange icons" menu
