Putting plug sockets in the wall ourselves, electrician in Ipswich?

Hi,

We are in the process of doing our living room up. It's being plastered next Saturday and we need to have new plug sockets. There are none attached to the walls at the moment, for some reason the last owner had them loose on the wires.

Is it a resonably simple job for us to chisel out the hole and fit the new sockets ourselves? Or for us just to chisel of the hole and have an electrician fit the new sockets?

Does anyone know of a resonable electrician in Ipswich?

Thanks,

It's a relatively easy job to knock the holes out for your sockets. If you do the 'donkey work' that will be 90% of the job and your chosen electrician can finish off. But to be honest, if I were you, I would want a full check of the wiring in your house. Anyone leaving sockets hanging by the cables may have cut other corners.

Knocking out is hard work, make it easier by using a masonry drill to make holes all around and within the area to the depth you need. Then knock out with a small masonry chisel; as you have the chance install triple sockets.

There is no reason at all you cannot do this as has been stated. However unless you are happy remove then replace the wiring from the socket terminals, I would leave that bit to a sparky. I would go with AgentO on this one and say I think you should get this wiring checked, as it does sound like either an amature has done it or corners have been cut.

Fantastic, thank you. Cutting out a lot of the cost of an electrician is what I like to hear. Guess we will give it a go then.

Depending on the brick used in your house (in my 110 year old terrace house the bricks are very hard), you may find it hard work just to knock out doubles. In this case I can whole-heartedly recommend these triple converters from Screwfix. They fit a double back box, but are very flush to the wall.

They look like just what we need. Thanks for the tip.
