Going into hospital - question re DLA?

Hi

I am asking this question on behalf of a friend of mine. She is on SDA (Severe disablement allowance) and DLA. Her son is in receipt of Income support and DLA.

She is due to go into hospital next week for an operation which will involve being in intensive care for about five days and her total stay is anticipated to be around two weeks all being well.

A nosy neighbour who looks down on her for her situation has told her that her benefits will be stopped for the period she is in hospital. Is this true? I told her I would ask you kind people who know about these things?

Would the benefit office do that just for a two week period????

As far as I know some benifits are effected but I think it is after 28days. When I was in hospital I did not get my care part of dla after 28days but not sure about other benifits but I am sure someone will be along that can answer for you

Yes Doelani is correct DLA would stop after 28 days in hospital, the following link gives details about hospital stays and benefits : http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/HealthAndSupport/Hospitals/DG_4000474

  • you should always inform the dla of any time spent in hospital,as there is a linking period i.e. if more than one period spent in hospital adds upto 28 days then it maybe stopped, most other benefits arent affected by hospital stays before 52 weeks but you should always inform the dwp.
