Car insurance query

Hi Folks new to the site obviously

Right what my query is i currently drive a 1.4 ford fieta silver 54 plate tottally standard etc value of 5.5k but im quite into modifying cars nothing heavy just the subtle things new alloys and lowering springs

but at the moment my insurance is fully comp but im paying around £1100 as a named driver!! bearing in mind im 18 years old and passed my test november of last year

but if i try to take out my own policy with the 2 modifications im seeing my insurance jump to around £2200 - £2500 and its getting on my wick a bit now so just looking for some advice of were to go or advice on even changing things

p.s my car is also fitted with a cat 1 alarm and immobiliser and is kept on a drive way at night and is in an fk (falkirk , scotland) area code

Insurance companies are likely to regard you as "Boy racer" and premiums will jump accordingly. Why not drive a standard car if you want standard premiums? By the way, being a named driver if you are the main/only driver is fraud.

At 18 years old - if you can afford to drive a £5k car then don't worry about doubling the cost of your already expensive insurance.

Alternatively, but something like a Renault Clio and learn to drive for a couple of years. Spend £150 on doing your Pass Plus which may also reduce the cost of your insurance.

i am not the only user of the car though my dad also uses the car quite frequently and ive always found cars dont have to be standard for cheap premiums my 1st car was a 1.4 spi rover metro gti and i was only a grand to insure that :S

can i just say the 5k car isnt easy to maintain or even run but lets put it this way i bought the 5k becuase i wanted something cheap and reliable to run but before this i had 4 different honda vti's 3 civic vtis and a crx vti and i was insuring these in my own name for around £1400 a year and these were more performance aimed cars than my fiesta is and ive took every measure possible to make this car cheaper a cat1 alarm cat 1 immobiliser and a tracker to be fitted next week

I said standard car- standard premium. No mention of cheap.
If you are insuring as named driver the idea is that your dad uses it most, you use it sometimes

It doesn't matter whether your father uses the car 'quite frequently'. What matters is who the main user of the car is. If you have told your insurer that the main user is your father when it is in fact you, then you are committing fraud and potentially have a worthless policy.

The mods on the car will be a massive giveaway if you continue this fraud with a new insurer.

BTW, adding security devices will only ever have a marginal effect on your premiums. The overwhelming risk as a young male driver is that you damage property of third parties, or injure/kill third parties.

yes this is why im asking about new policys as i am intending to start a new policy at the start of this week in my own name to build my own claims

and yes i understand about the damage to 3rd parties etc but ive found when ive done qoutes its had no marginable effect on my insurance ive found most companies ive searched through are giving a £30 - £50 discount on the qoute to me its pointless doing my pass plus

and the modifications on my car are not because im a boy racer or i was to "race" my car about city circuits etc i modify my car because im an enthusiast and i do it for the fun and the time to say i built that :cool:

sorry if i seem to upfront or if im being cheeky im just trying to get the grasps with things and get the proper advice with people who know more

Treat bryanb's and raskazz' comments about possible fraud etc. very seriously - if the car has been insured to make it look as tho' someone else is the main driver when the main driver is actually you, don't think the insurance company will show you any sympathy if they find that out after an accident or theft.

Worst case scenario: Car written off, no insurance pay out, a conviction for driving without insurance, and bigger insurance headaches going forward than you now have.

    What to do?

Insure a car - in your own name - a car chosen so that you can afford the premium (you've already shown it can be done), build the no claims discount in your name, join an advanced motorists group, and harsh as reality is today - a few years of safe driving from now, the premium for a higher rated car will be affordable.

*EDIT* Worse case scenario should have also included potentially paying out personally for any third party injuries or damage etc.

yes everything is being treated very seriously me and my dad both use the car as much as each other but i reckon i do more and at the moment im not building the no claims which is bugging me the most also had a look about and found norwich union simple cover to be the cheapest at £1461.64 fully comp not bad i think but i dunno

at the end of the day shall be paying my deposit for it tommorow
