Best way to choose suppliers?
We sold our house last year and are currently living with my mum, we should be exchanging contracts on our new house in the next couple of weeks.
At our old house we were with British Gas and Eon, but not sure the best way to choose a supplier when we don't know what our consumption will be?
Any thoughts appreciated

Hello
I just joined the forum to ask the exact same question! We're first time buyers and our house is ready in a few weeks. With no experience of gas/electric suppliers, using something like USwitch to find out the cheapest gas and electric prices is pointless.
Is there a website that lists the cheapest suppliers without consumption? Is NPower generally cheaper than British Gas? Or can suppliers not be compared like that without having some consumption figures?
Hope someone can help!
Cheers

Most websites will allow you to say "no bills available" etc and then help you work out usage based on averages and a few simple questions.
Just choose any supplier for your "current" supplier.
AFAIK the "average" consumption of electric per year is about 3300KWh
I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.:cool:0 -

Service ratings have to be considered also, Rag....nPower are in the middle of sculpting issues. Numerous reports of poor customer servicing at BG.
Southern Energy have a good reputation and have some cheap tariffs.
Online tariffs are the least costly. Ebico are good for low users and have a simple bill structure. Numerous green offers with all suppliers.
Average usage is something like 20,000 kwh for gas and as Mute says 3300 for electric.
Roughly £1000 a year and a lot less with heavy insulation.
Some providers do an annual discount, Atlantic is one, mentioned in 'tariff details'on the comparison sites.
If you use all the comparison sites to compare they won't come out the same, stick to one...Energyhelpline I use
Reading the stickies above will give you a lot of basic info.
More later if you need.0
