Travel insurance confusion!

Hi,
I'm going to America on a driving holiday between 1st of September until 27th of November (just under 3 months) and am looking at travel insurance. Quite confusing though, just been looking on travelsupermarket and single trip cover is actually more expensive than "Backpacker & long stay" - but would this be classed as a long stay or not?
Best result under long stay is by Flexicover Direct which is around £44 "premium" - I'm guessing premium means total cost right? Under single trip the best suitable one is Club Direct which is like £57 premium. I have never organised my own travel abroad before so I am quite confused!
Any help greatly appreciated!
