Is it me or have tinned peas gone really awful?

I only buy a couple of tins every few weeks and have tried different brands, but after the last lot i`m not buying anymore. They`re Smedleys and the label says Garden Peas but when i opened them its obvious that they`re Petit Pois peas!
I`ve aslo stopped buying marrowfat because they`re so pale when you open the tins you don`t feel like eating them.

The reason why marrowfat peas are paler is because manufacturers aren't putting as much artificial colourings in. In fact I'm sure that it was in the news a few weeks ago that certain food colourings were due to be banned by the EU and that tinned peas would be one of the affected products. The should still taste the same and your eyes do get used to the paler colour:D . I can't comment on the tinned garden peas as I've never bought them.

hmmm, not sure about garden peas issue since I don't buy them

but I do like the trend for pale marrowfats, I've never understood why they put that awful blue dye in them

    Hi

I normally keep in a couple of tins of mushy, garden and marrowfat peas. The mushy ones we have with chips but the others are used incase I forget to cook them or to pad out a stew etc. I buy the ones from Waitrose normally but the Asda ones are fine too.

Weren't tinned peas always awful? I remember my mum used to give them to us, along with tinned carrots and smash when we were camping. Ugh!

I've had the odd tin of mushy peas, ok, but not like the ones you do yourself.

there was somthing on the news a few weeks ago when the colourings were banned and the reporter was talking to someone from sainsbury's and asked why the colourings had not be taken out sooner and she said they had tried it before but the consumer didn't like the paler colour so they had gone back to the coloured version!! however now the eu laws are changing the colours will have to be removed - it was even suggested that mushy peas may become a thing of the past if consumer demand falls as a result.

I buy tinned mushy peas, for convenience. Five tins for £1 at Asda. I like them, but I agree that they'd be better without the colourings. I certainly don't think of them as part of my five a day...more a naughty/lazy treat!

Tinned garden peas I just hate - far too salty, far too overcooked and bland. Frozen peas are just as easy to use so I go for them. (I miss shelling peas for dinner with my mum, though!)

Yup. I bought four different Tesco and Asda tinned peas a few weeks ago to compare taste (or rather, lack of). The only ones that looked like 'proper' tinned peas were the Tesco Value ones, which still had the colouring added.

It's amazing what we've gotten used to over the years.
