Curtains?

Hi MSEs

BF and I have moved into our new room with our very nice and generaous landlord/friends in Farnham.

Everything is going well the painting of the room is almost done

BUT

our room is at the front of the house and the traffic is absolutely horrendous! We cannot put double glazing as the building is a listed cottage. There is a secondary panel to put in front of the window on the inside but it makes so little difference. We were thinking about thick curtains but they are never the right size (130cm in width) and are always so "flimsey" and are so expensive too...

Any advice appreciated, even telling me how to make some, I am not afraid of sewing by hand!

Thx in advance.

  • Hi, I made the curtains in my bedroom when i saw the ones I wanted were well over £100!!

I bought a single quilt cover, unstitched it, folded edges over and sealed with wundaweb THEN!!! I sewed on lining and out of the left over material I made some tabtops - to make them a bit nicer I bought some pretty buttons and sewed one on each tab - they are just as nice as the ones in the shop but cost hardly anything!

Try it - its much easier than it sounds and when people see mine they are genuinely surprised that they're home made from a quilt cover!
:D I understand ALOT more than I care to let on :D
  • My mum keeps on telling me that making curtains is the easiest thing in the world because they're "just squares" - but I'm a boy - so the talk of sewing is editted out of the conversation :(

  • just bought some huge curtains from dunelm mill today. For a massive window and they were £10 the pair. Fully lined and ready to hang, how ace is that. I would try Dunelm Mill, it is very cheap.

I seem to remember Westhouse Textiles have a shop in or near Farnham. They have a massive stock of very reasonably priced fabric, and they also offer a curtain making service at reasonable prices. Check your Yellow Pages.

However - - if you are hoping for the curtains to take the traffic noise away, I am afraid, I think you will be disappointed.......might be cheaper to get some earplugs in Boots (if you can stand earplugs).

Curtain making guides are available on the web, e.g. on www.alternative-windows.com/ (but don't buy their books if you want to keep your budget down!)
