I have a beautiful silver engraved bracelet from when I was a year old - I'm 28 now and couldn't bear to be parted with it - even though it only just fits over a few of my fingers!

    Or a locket?

My Daughter was 2 in July and her favourite things at the moment are playdough (fairly expensive for dough as it is cheap and easy to make yourself, but lots of good tools, sets and accessaries on sale),Duplo(toddlers lego), my little ponies, baby dolls and jewellry (make sure it's not sharp, scratchy or chokable).Lift the flap books, and jigsaws(lift out type)and wooden bricks.

My 2 year old son loves having mummy and daddy time, going out and looking at photos. I would suggest taking your daughter out for the day to somewhere she would like armed with a cheap disposable camera or two, get people to take pictures of you two together having fun. Get a little present for her to open, such as a bracelet, over lunch. Get the photos developed and put them in a pretty album, and maybe put in a little note with each picture to say what you were doing. She can then look back on the pictures and remember her day, and when she is old enough she can read the notes. Memories last longer than toys, and are cheaper too.

    Books definitely.
My OH started reading "winnie the Pooh" to our first when she was 2, and .... he knows all the stories by heart now.

Time shared is the nicest gift, especially if it is in short supply.

If you don't like reading, how about play-doh accessories. The dough itself is very easy to make (just ask if you need a recipe) , and you can have hours of fun playing together with dough...
