Paying Off Egg Credit Card - Advice Please

Hi All....
We received the letter that many others have had regarding our egg credit card being closed. We have a faultless credit rating, but this isn't our problem.
My wife rang them up three weeks ago to pay off the full amount and was told that there would be a remaining ballance for the interest for the previous three weeks and that we would be advised of the amount. This was ok and she paid off the £3000 we owed over the phone.
We heard nothing at all and today we received a call from egg stating that we haven't made any payment for this month. When my wife told them that she'd paid off the bulk £3000 and we were wating for notice of how much the remaining interest was, she was told that the £3000 was not paid.
This payment was made over the phone so how can we prove we made it?
My wife, again, made the payment of £3000 over the phone today, but now egg say that we must pay the interest on the full amount. So instead of the remaining ballance being around £40 it's now £80.
They wouldn't put us through to anyone else on the phone so we could sort the issue out.

Where do we stand? I don't want to pay for the extra interest as the error lies with egg for not processing the payment. They said that they can see from their records that we rang and made the payment but do not know why it wasn't processed.

Any advice would be very helpful

Thanks in advacne
Andy

How did she pay? Debit card? Has the money left your (her) account?
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.

Dealing with egg is one of the most frustrating and stressful experiences you could wish for. I went through this recently after they cocked up a direct debit payment and charged me for their own mistake. Thanks for the replies.
Brian Bullocks she paid by debit card and no money was taken out. We didn't realise that the payment had not been made until egg telephoned us. I guess we should have checked our bank statement earlier.

bluesand you are so right - we have no idea why they cancelled our card either!
