Lloyds asking for medical evidence on ppi claim??

Hi,
I am fairly new to all this and wonder if anyone can help me? My husband took out a loan with Lloyds TSB in 2005 with PPI. Since realising that he would have been unable to make a claim if he had needed to due to a pre-exisiting medical condition and this not being explained to him at the time etc. etc., we wrote to Lloyds using the first template letter.
We have received a response from Lloyds TSB asking for evidence of this "in particular evidence of the condition having been diagnosed by a doctor at the time."
Are we expected to pay the surgery for a letter confirming that they diagnosed him with the condition?? - i am reluctant to do this out of principal and because they charge you too! Or could we just state the condition and dates diagnosed and advise them that we would be prepared to prove this in court or should we authorise them access to his medical records??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think a letter signed by him authorising the bank to have access to his medical records would suffice.
