Just want to spread the word. I use an old fashioned pulley maid to dry my washing on wet or damp days. It hangs over the landing at the top of the stairs out of the way and the heat from downstairs rises and drys the washing. It cost me £40, but with 4 kids in the house ( 5 if you include my husband) I reckon I've got my money back already saving money on tumble drying and doing my bit for the enviroment aswell. Didn't every home have one 100 years ago!

we used to have one of these when i was a kid....

I have seen them used in ploy tunnels and garages to dry out clothes..

will look one up for me  could come in handy ( 4 kids here to)

As nice as they look, how do you affix them ensuring they wont fall and do someone some damage - especially those cast iron ones!?
That worried me at first! You have to look in your loft for the joist and screw the very long screw fitting (2 inches approx) into the ceiling through the joist. I am completley confident mine wont fall down although I dont hang really heavy things on there, Jeans and heavy sweatshirts I hang over the bannisters. They come with full fitting instructions
  • This is like re-inventing the wheel sometimes PMSL. I had one in my old flat(4-in-a-block Cottage type) & it was wonderful. In a high-rise flat now without one. Never had a tumble drier. Great for 1 person like me, or a couple who don't change their clothes every 5mins like families do. hth:)
  • I thought these looked great!

But the film 'Control' has put me off them, if you have seen it you will know why :(
  • hi,

I am just wondering if anyone knows where i can find a pully maid from within Ireland?? REALLY WANT TO FIND ONE!

    thanks for your help.

Can I suggest one of these for those of you who may struggle to put up the pulley maid.
You can get them from caravan shops for about £6. I use mine over the banister hanging down over the stairwell ....just make sure that the arms will fit the bansiter railing (or you need to come up with another way??) They are similar to the raidator airers but have about 12 rails on them.

I find it brilliant as I was struggling with the heavier type clothing which was starting to smell if it didn't dry quick enough.

Lovely people, and I use the pulley every day.
  • I've just started crocheting, and OH dug out a 1935 book called Home Hobbies and a Handicrafts which was his fathers.

It gives diagrms and instructions for a wooden clip on and a wooden pully type airers, using 4 wooden coat hangers (cost 2-3 d each) 4 foot of 2 x 1" timber. 1 dozen 1 1/2 " screws and three rods of desired length.

there is no pully system shown but can guess how it would be fitted

It even tells ou how to get the best from your gas lighting OMG

  • Oooooh I have one of these and its brilliant! I live in a Victorian house and it still has the its original pully-maid from back in the day! :D Its hung above (what used to be a range) fire in dining room. I'd never herd of them til I moved into my current house but they really are fab. I can't believe how quickly things get dried on there.
  • we had one about 25yrs ago, was above the coal fire and dried just about everything. best thing ever
