old fashoined pulley maids

Just want to spread the word. I use an old fashioned pulley maid to dry my washing on wet or damp days. It hangs over the landing at the top of the stairs out of the way and the heat from downstairs rises and drys the washing. It cost me £40, but with 4 kids in the house ( 5 if you include my husband) I reckon I've got my money back already saving money on tumble drying and doing my bit for the enviroment aswell. Didn't every home have one 100 years ago!

I got one of these when we got our extension with utility room last year. Got them to leave the sloping roof open instead of putting a ceiling in. I didn't use the TD until last week, when dd didn't manage to get her morris dancing kit in the wash in time. It's great!

  • ooh I would love one of those but don't have room in the kitchen - I never thought that you could put it at the top of the landing - where do you buy them from?

As nice as they look, how do you affix them ensuring they wont fall and do someone some damage - especially those cast iron ones!?

erm, can't remember off hand where I got mine. I can only fit in a 1.5m one, which is a bit too narrow really. However, got the 6rail rather than the 4rail.

Lakeland have them I believe, but there are a lot more retailers that have them.

They're fab, aren't they? I don't have a tumble drier, have three small children and used washable nappies on all of them, and it was brilliant for drying the nappies in super-quick time. I wouldn't be without mine - I got it about three years ago from https://www.sheilamaid.com, but need to replace the rope as it's been pulled up and down so much it's very frayed!

I use mine on a daily basis and recommend them highly. They're especially useful when baby comes along and laundry seems to triple! My house is ancient and the airer looks like it could well be a couple of centuries old. It's stood the test of time and is still going strong -What's a tumble drier?? ha, ha.

I also use mine daily and love hanging it up to dry (i have a very sad life) overnight. It was very easy to put up but you need to attach it to beams to obviously be able to hold lots of wet washing.

I have two adults and 3 young children and i very rarely have to use the tumble dryer. Although i do have it right next to my kitchen window and enjoy seeing it blowing in the wind and think about the electricity im saving!!!!

I got mine from B&Q, if i remember correctly it was £30. The best £30 i have ever spent!

I miss mine so much since i had to sell our old house when ex and i split up. Ours used to be in the garage, where the central heating boiler was, and used to dry the clothes wonderfully, now its just a clothes horse cluttering the house up :(
