would they allow working from home, or have you considered moving closer to work-

or even getting a cheap(?) place to stay nearby, during the week?

    Hi

They wont move out of London as thats where the main part of their business is, and they (bosses) live nearby.

I cant really afford somewhere in London (i have 2 cats as well!), and i dont think they would pay for me to live closer as i did take the job on knowing the travel aspet...

The difference in your take home pay from £27.5k to £20k is £5,025 a year.
That may help with the sums. Is your train fare to be taken off this difference, if so, it's only £2k - or 100 nights a year of pub work.

However, your work life balance will be vastly improved, your health would improve (even with a 2-min walk to work!), you have gained over 3 days a year of time back by shortening your working day by an hour, and at the end of the day, if you can't work because you are exhausted, your debts wouldn't get paid as quickly anyway.

    Hi Amy,

I live in Kent, well when I'm not at university I do. I used to work in London when i lived in Kent so I know what a journey it is. I remember leaving my home at 7am and not getting in till 8pm, sometimes later if the trains were delayed, which was normally every other day.

When I left my job in London and got a job locally with less pay I loved it. I looked at it this way, I spent nearly 3K on travel a year, and on top of that every day i would normally buy a hot choc at the station, a paper, a magazine, so thats an extra £5 on top a day. I'm not sure if you buy things to keep you 'entertained' on your long journey into work. When i worked up the road i jumped in the car and the only money i was spending was travel, which wasn't a lot.

I would go for looking for a job locally and maybe doing an evening job!

    Thanks Hayley

I had a local job last year (started in July 07) but i got made redundant in December. I was gutted. I first got the bus to work, and then i passed my driving test and loved driving 20 mins to work! I was warning £2K more than this job over the road from me, but i was running a car and paying petrol.

I think i need to do an SOA with this jobs money.

    £15,389.10...as against £20,414.10

That's tax & NI, but without any pension contributions though.

Ok so i have worked out i would be £179.25 "worse off" each month if i go for that job.

The worse that would happen would be that I wouldnt be able to pay off an extra £200 on my credit card every month, it would be £20 instead.

However, if i did 3 shifts in the pub that would counter act that, and I would still have 4 nights a week to myself, and the extra time between finishing work and starting the pub shift.

Im thinking i will apply for the job and see what happens... i probably wont even get asked for an interview! :rotfl:

Apply for the job and at interview if they mention money, you can always let them know how much you were on before and that ideally you were looking for a bit more... it could turn into £21 or £22k perhaps! x
