  • As someone who received one of those little notes through the door when my aunt died I would be very careful how you word it.

My attitude to this particular note was they would be the last people I would sell to but its possibly because the note was through the door within hours of the neighbours being told she had died icon8.gif

Sorry to hear that and thanks for your reply Edinburghlass but I'm wondering if there is any point in even thinking about it anymore due to the reasons mentioned above.

If they bought the house only a year ago for £119,000 they're hardly going to sell to me for £120,000 which is the price of nextdoor.

    Thanks all,
    Jill

Don't be so pessimistic! If you don't ask you'll never know will you.

They might have bought it but can't afford to do anything with it now? There could be loads of reasons why it's been unlived in.

Always take the chance, one day it might pay off.

    Just word things carefully.

Politeness is all important in your letter. Say thank-you for taking the time to read it, and apologies if it should prove to be unwelcome or inappropriate.
  • I did a letter through the letterbox! it was a house that looked like it was being developed - just wrote something like if you are developing this house to sell please give me a ring on ********** as i am looking to buy a property in this area and my house is currently under offer.

Unfortunately didnt pay off for me heard nothing! the house is now finished and stunning but they were renovating for themselves - the woman we bought this house of moved next door but on to it!!!

Definitely worth ago! I would also post a letter to the property as if the post is being redirected it may get to the owners that way.

    good luck

I've had notes through the door twice in my last two houses.

The last one said something like .....Hello, our daughter is looking to get on the property ladder in this area. If you would like to sell your house then please call us on **** ****** . She is a cash buyer and is not in a chain.

I must say that if we had contemplated selling we wouldn't have hesitated to ring her. (We'd only been living here about 3 weeks though lol)

Maybe a note like 'Hello, we are a family/couple interested in buying a property in this area. If you are interested in selling then please contact us on the following number. Thanks'
Just run, run and keep on running!

I went to 'sus out' the area where a bungalow is for sale prior to making an appointment to view internally and, because there is a row of shops behind the house, went and knocked on a couple of doors either side of it.

My sister-in-law did this, but she put a note through every house in the street - worded it in such a way as to be polite, but not desperate or anything.

It worked for her, and pretty successsfully. The house has increased in price so much it's unbelievable.

But as others have said, I'd be careful how it was worded.

If and when I move again, I'd find an area and do the same.

    Good luck :)

    Thanks for all your replies.

I've just done a search for the street on houseprices.co.uk and the house was listed as being bought in August 2004 for £119,000 which is £1000 under the price of nextdoor. £120,000 is just about our limit so we don't stretch ourselves too much. I can't see them selling for anything less than £125,000.

I still might send the letter, through the post though just in case they have their mail re-directed.

Don't forget to say that if you have a private agreement and no estate agents involved that will save them a lot of money.

ie Estate agents fees for the seller.

They might drop the price a bit then.

I've put a letter in the post so let's see if there's a response.
Thanks to everyone for their replies,
