Basically, I need the BT line rental for broadband, but I want to pay as little as possible. I don't even want a land line but was told by Virgin that cable broadband was unavailable at my new address (in south Manchester!).

    Thanks!

You'd be well advised to check that you can get broadband (from BT or a BT LLU) before getting the phone line. If you're not near a BT exchange then you might only be able to get a low speed (and/or poor quality line) or even nothing at all. There are sites which you can type your postcode into that will tell you what speed you will get with different ISPs.

I'm 3.5 miles from the nearest BT exchange and therefore just about every ISP is off limits to me and I have no other choice but to use NTL (Virginmedia) who have an exchange about 0.5 mile away.
