I'm wondering if this green campaign is just a way of cutting costs in disguise. If people can only pay money in electronically there won't be as many queues in the branch. Not as many queues mean they don't need so many people behind the counter...

There was me thinking HSBC was doing this for the environment

    I took the £5 though ;)

If you request a paper statement, cheque book, paying in book, etc then they will (may?) just remove the "green" option from your account acording to the t&cs. So take the £5 and when you want one of these things just ring up and ask. That's what I intend to do.

I still think Martin needs to clarify whether exisiting customers will actually get the £5 though, because on the banner when I did it it said I was giving £5 to charity and there was no option not to. Worth a try though.

I just recieved a letter telling me i wont be entitled to the £5, because i live in the British Isles and not the uk, and therefore have an offshore account (sounds like im rich lol).

I really fail to understand why this should affect it though, unless its to stop all the tax avoiders from getting even more money?

you do know that this has absolutely NOTHING to do with going green? it's to save the banks money on paper.

Not having a cheque book or paying in book does limit what you can do. What do you do if someone sends you a cheque?
Use a 'loose' paying in slip in the branch, there's usually a big wadge of them on the customer desks near the counters :)

or if you have your card handy, just hand the cheque over with the card and ask to put it in that account.

sorted. i've never used a paying in slip.

And if you like modern technology, you'll like the paying-in machines that some banks have. You put your card in, slide the cheque into the paying-in slot, the machine then reads the amount using handwriting recognition software, credits your account (either in real time or overnight, depending on the bank) and gives you a receipt that includes a photocopy of the cheque you've just payed in, as well as printing the amount.

I didn't even notice and option to donate it to charity or not, I don't know if I'll get it though because I've had online statements for ages. I do still have a cheque book and paying in book though, only time will tell :)
