Frugallas, here in Northern Ireland, MOTs are carried out by govenment test centres on all vehicles as opposed to them being carried out by garages on the mainland. When your car passes the MOT, you get a computerised certificate printed out and at the bottom is a perforated disc, much like a tax disc (same size). It has been done this way now for about 7 years but it was never necessary to display the disc, until now.
To see what one looks like, look here:

Max5heads, MOT discs DO have to displayed on a motorbike, whoever told you that has misled you and I would advise you to display it as soon as possible. I think now, you can buy double weatherproof holders for tax/mot disc.

How long do you think it will be before we have to display proof of our insurance too like they do "Down South".

IMO that's a very good idea given the number of uninsured drivers we have here.

Well you learn something new everyday, I was under the impression that the disc had to be displayed already and have had mine up since the day I got it

In a way I think it a good idea as well but in the real world... some figures suggest at any one time 10% of people on the road have no insurance . A bit of easily photocopiable paper isnt gonna put of some hardcore criminals .
The thing that gets me about the fact that tax discs and now MoT discs have to be displayed is that the whole system is computerised anyhow . Your tax , MoT and insurance status can be brought up automatically in an ANPR equipped police car without them even touching a button . Normal law-abidding motorists who have their car taxed , insured and MoTed could be fined by a jobsworth cop just because the disc fell off the window .
More needs to be done to get illegal motorists off the road and I dont necessarily think fining people for not displaying a piece of paper is the whole answer .

I have a mate in the PSNI and he says they've been told to take it easy to begin with as many people who will have done their MOT last summer will not be able to find their disc, so for the first few months anyway it's just going to be warnings rather than fines.
