Foldable breakfast bar

Hi I am looking to put a foldable breakfast bar type thing in my kitchen - does anyone know where I could get one or whether I could make one from a worktop and just fit hinges to it??

Thanks for your help x

I think I've seen something like this in ikea.. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/28048309 Not sure if it's what you want though. (Hope the link works)

Yes, you can use ordinary worktop if you so desire. You dont say how wide you want it though. The problem is the leg you will need at the end to support it, and getting it so it looks nice. I'll let you mull on that bit. As for hinges, you might be better off using a Piano hinge (Howdens or Screwfix) which is a constant strip about 5ft long which you cat to length. Using this will create a strong joint as they are screwed on about every 3" and will leave a very narrow gap as opposed to traditional Butt hinges.

We used to have a similar type of thing in our other house that my hubby made himself.
He cut a piece of worktop to the length we needed about four/five foot i think, piano hinges along the back and three legs, one of either end and one in the middle for strength, which he fitted to it so that when we had the worktop to use as a breakfast bar the legs unclipped and stood on the floor and then to drop it down the legs clipped back on to the underside of the breakfast bar and you couldnt see them. It was brilliant and saved a lot of space when we didnt need to use it!!

I had one which folded out from a drawer from B&Q, can't remember what it was called though to do a search.

That sounds just what we are looking for! (can I hire your husband do you think!!?) I'm pleased to hear it can be done and I wasn't going crazy!

One thing though - in the join at the hinges - did you have the inside of the worktop exposed or is there a way of covering that up??

    Thanks!

Thanks! Am just wanting it normal worktop width so that ideally when not in use - it just looks like a cupboard without a door (obviously not exactly like that!)

What kind of legs would you recommend?
