AVG 8 free or not

Hi I have been using AVG 7.5 for ages and found it great but now a message keeps popping up telling me to get version 8, but when I looked a while ago it seemed I have to pay for it. Anyway the message kept popping up and so I thought I would look again and it appears that now you can get a free version of AVG 8. What is going on, I thought Grisoft was always offering AVG free for private users, is it just that the free version comes out later than the paid for one, or did I miss something, or is this only a trial version?

Secondly is 8 any good, ie should I upgrade to it as I have read previous posts and it seems maybe that 8 is not so popular?

Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched and did not quite find the answers I was looking for.

Any info appreciated.

    Thanks for the link BillScarab, clarifies a lot, didn't realise it was so recent that the free version came out, trouble is that makes it too early to get an idea on, if it is as well liked as 7.5 was. I think 7.5 was quite popular compared to others which is what tempted me to use it against others, so now I would like to hear the same about 8 before I update and take on any possible problems it may come with.

    Have you updated to it and do you like it, didn't take note if you posted in that link you gave me?

    Nope, I moved away from AVG 7.5 to Avira AntiVir. There was nothing wrong with AVG I just wanted to try AntiVir. I was considering trying AVG 8 but form what I've heard so far I'll stick with AntiVir.
