Kitchen Worktop Edging

Hi all
Just bought a new kitchen from Homebase. I’ve opted to buy some work top edging (3 or 4 inch skirting) that sits on top of the worktop, which is of the same material to finish off the look. What are peoples opinions of this edging (my worktop and edging is black gloss finish). Is it a big no no or is it a good idea. They initially didn’t add it to my list of items so I requested it. After speaking to my fitter, his personal opinion is that I shouldn’t put it on and just get some nice quality tiles and just tile from top units to the worktop.
Secondly, if I don’t use them will homebase allow me to return the item?? I’m sure I’ve read a note in store that said, if I bought a kitchen I cannot return part of the order if I didn’t not want it’
Regards

As regards the returning of the goods, that is down to the company in this instance and you will need to speak to them, but most kitchen parts are ordered in specially, therfore you cannot return them.
As for the upstand, that is a personal preference. I've fitted with and without. There are times when it looks good, times when it doesn't. It doesn't always look good to have both the upstand and tiles though!

we have black worktops with a matching upstand. it looks ok, but after installing it, i think i would rather have gone for a single row of tiles instead. unless your walls are very straight, its hard to get it to fit . weve had to fill the top gap, with alot of sealant. its also hard to decide what to do behind the hob, do you stop the run of upstand, and replace with a splashback? or do you not bother with a splashback and just continue the upstand in one long length. at least if you tile an upstand, you can match the splashback.
just my views

I agree with ukwoody. Its down to preference. We did a black gloss one recently which was about 5" deep and it looks really smart. They had tiles as well and the overall lookn is impressive. Flea72 identifies a problem although professional fitters have ways of fitting it so the gap doesn't show on awkward walls.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

And btw it's called an 'upstand', not edging. Edging is a thin strip of the laminate that is stuck to exposed ends of the worktop.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

I think I'll have the work top fitted and see how it look, then decide if the upstand will look nice or not... Good point on the splash back... I'm contemplating whether or not to have a glass splash back or stainless steel one.
