Interest Charge & Late Fee

Last month I forgot to pay my credit card bill on time and so was charged the interest which was due. Not happy - but my fault, so can't complain. However, this month's bill also included a £12 late fee. I rang ask for an explanation and said that you can take one or the other but not both, the answer was always "it's in the terms." Any costs involved in me not paying on time would sureley be covered by the interest charge. The £12 would seem to me to be a penalty, not a means of covering their extra cost (which would only be a line of ink on the bill and a few micro-seconds of processing time). Am I right in thinking this and, if so, can I do anything about it?

This is common practise and your complaint will get you nowhere unless this is the first time it has happen and you get through to someone willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

I think your thinking on the matter is wrong.
