Help selling a second hand car

Hi,

A relative has recently died, leaving two cars as part of the inheritance. I need to sell these two cars asap so the money can be divided up to the beneficiaries.

How should I go about this? I am pretty busy, so don't want to waste too much time over it unless I will get substantially more by doing so. I thought about advertising in Loot, Autotrader and ebay. The problem with ebay however is that I don't have an account with much feedback. How about selling it on to a dealer? How would I go about this, and what sort of price would I get?

The cars are both Mercedes, and the values according to Parkers are as follows:
Car 1 - Private Good £ 5175, Private Poor £ 3800, Part Exchange £ 4510
Car 2 - Private Good £ 5870 Private Poor £ 4100, Part Exchange £ 4900

What could I realistically be looking to get through the various channels?

Any other tips/advice?

Thanks

I advise you to avoid the dealers. Admitedly, its the least hassle as you get no timewasters and no waiting for people to come round and look at the cars but you will get bottom dollar - especially if arent trading in against somethign else.

I suggest you use the auto trader. It does cost £40 to advertise, but its the best way to sell as you will get the best price for the car and it is the most widely read.

Loot is OK too but not as widely read as auto trader.

I usually advertise in Auto Trader backed up by Free Ads in Loot, findit.co.uk and pistonheads.co.uk

In terms of what the cars are worth, I never go by the prices in these guide books. The best bet is to look in auto trader (or https://www.autotrader.co.uk) and see what kind of money similar age/condition models are advertised at. Then for a quick sale, price them a bit less.

    Hope that helps!!

hi, advertise through the local paper or autotrader. The trouble is you have to be prepared for tire kickers/time wasters etc.

Avoid all car dealers, they will pay bottom price.

the best thing is to get the cars mot'd so they have 12 months mot and put it through auction. the drawback is the price its sold which you cant control unless you put a reserve. full mot will help to shift the cars
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

https://www.tradeit.co.uk Have a huge free ad car section
  • Dont worry about having low feedback on ebay, just list them with no reserve at the minimum price you would take. If nobody bids its only cost you £6 per listing. Put lots of photos on and give an honest description. You will be amazed at the interest!
