hi all
my sister has just rang for some advice, as she is looking to get her first uk passport. now, as we were both brought up in local authority care, we have had no contact with either birth parent since babies. The passport helpline have told her that she needs to know parents dob, and that when she said she did not know them (explained circumstances) they said to get in touch with registery office and get copies of birth certificates.
now i know this is a money saving site, so i will ask about having to do that on financial grounds, but also - surely that cant be right? It is causing a lot of upset, as neither of us particulary want to know anything about our birth parents! (we are both in our thirties, so not stroppy teenagers lol)
any advice/info would be greatly appreciated

Is there anyone who could do this for your sister.
Maybe a trusted friend or a partner could apply for the certs and then complete the form without your sister having to see any of the details.
You would need to have some idea of where your parent was born, to identify which registry office to apply to.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

sorry to say this but passport office will not budge on this, she will have to do what they ask if she wants her passport, even if it means digging up the past. you both may not want to know about your birth parents, but you will need their details on that passport applicationLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

As your sister will have to sign the form confirming that all the information is correct, it would be very unwise to let someone fill in information that she doesn't know about.0 -
Just to reassure you, you can get a copy of the short version of your birth certificate which is perfectly legal and adequate for a passport application. It's what I used for myself.
The only information on it is:
Name and Surname
Sex
Date of Birth
Place of Birth
and is signed by the superintendent registrar.
No unwanted information at all
Hope that helps.
Edited to say, that was no help at all! I've just re-read your post and it's the parents' dates of birth that are required for the passport office, not your own birth certificate. What a dreadful scenario for you

HI,
they are getting very strict on passports now, especially first ones so as others have said there is no way they will budge on it. She may have to attend an interview now also to confirm who she is. It seems to be a new thing they are doing.
My DH just applied for his first one and it took ages and he had to go to an interview too. He also had to send his mums passport to them with his application too (on their advice).
Sorry i know its no help.
Please be nice to all moneysavers!

If you are both care-leavers, would your ex-local authority be able to help with this information?0

Hi, i was brought up in care and have just got my first passport. I rang the passport helpline and told them that i was brought up in care and that i only had my parents names. They told me to write a letter saying this and enclose it along with my birth certificate(i only have the small one) with my passport application. Within a week i had a letter back saying that i need to go for a interview(went on a saturday)and had my passport arrive the following tuesday. So you dont need all your parents details, good luck0
