I am sure you would be horrified to know how government wastes our money.

    Here's a good one.

Once upon a time there was a gypsy site. Father gypsy decided to buy a field and without telling the council put caravans on it and started to rent them out to European familes working at a local factory.

The man from the council put in a court injunction and one nice Euro family with 3 small children were told to leave. They said we have no where to go? So the nice people at the council re-housed them in temporary holiday accomodation 16 miles away. £400 for the week and £60 a day to help with taxis to their jobs. After a week they moved them again. More money and more taxis. After 2 weeks the council said sorry but we only give 2 weeks temporary accomodation, go live in the street.

So the nice Euro family went back to father Gypsy, who gave them the keys to the caravan so they could have a roof over their heads.

What a waste of my council tax!

But what about all the "non jobs" staff they employ? Each one cost the council taxpayer for their pension, state of the art PC, ergonomically designed desk and chair, not to mention cost of training them in the latest "PC claptrap". I think there should be a freeze on all public sector recruitment unless the positions are at the "sharp end", i.e. direct contact with council tax payers, such as refuse collectors, counter staff, help-desks, etc., then there may be an improvement in the quality of service. All we seem to have is more and more bloated bureacracy behind the scenes which never appears to be particularly useful.

Don't forget certain Lord Chief Justices who spent tens of thousands of pounds on wallpaper etc.

Out of interest, what are we entitled to find out about our council's spending through the Freddom of Information Act?

Im not too sure but I do know that council offices are open to public review two weeks a year, so you can inspect the books.

This happened in wales and I think 7 councillors got done and 3 of em went
to jail for cooking the books.

Yes we are. Our local paper is always printing articles about council spending from facts it has obtained by using this act.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

You can find out pretty much anything you want. However following the original influx of people asking dumb questions (simply because they could) which wasted vast amounts of time they are likely to make a charge for any information requested.

Note that this is another waste of council money because several councils have had to employ extra staff to handle all the requests under FOI (more tax payers money down the tubes).
