Hello first of all great forum really useful.

I need to replace my clutch on my Ford Cougar 2.0 its A Zetech Engine. Thing is I was given a price of £400. But when i look around I see a new clutch kit costs around £100 so Im wondering what is th cheapest way of going about to do it, am I getting ripped off?

Not necessarily. Clutches are a pain in the bum to replace. Gearboxes have to be removed which means the whole drive train (hubs, driveshafts etc) will also have to be removed. Its a few hours work and thats what makes up the bulk of the £400.

The best thing is to shop around. Phone your dealership up - laugh at the ridiculous price they will quote you. Call Mr clutch - they seem reputable and relatively cheap. Phone a few local independent garages and some ford specialists.

Don't go for the cheapest quote.

Oh and the cheapest way of doing the job is to do it yourself, if you can.

    Hope that helps.

No you're not getting ripped off. It's a drop the subframe to get at it job and it takes several hours. At around £40-£50/hr, the price is about right which is why you find lots of cheap Mondeos, Focii and Cougars for sale with duff clutches.

Long gone are the days where you can do a 2hr clutch change on the side of the road with nothing more than a pair of axle stands and a 17mm spanner.
