I've got a jar of ovaltine left over from the dreaded morning sickness days when tea just tasted sooo wrong!! _pale_ I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for using it up in baking maybe?
It is the ovaltine original that you add milk to, rather than the instant type that has milk powder in it. Thank you!!!

Ovaltine Rusks
Ingredients
Very stale bread
1/4 pint milk
1 oz butter
3 tablespoons sugar
3-4 tablespoons Ovaltine
I egg
For The Topping
1/2 oz butter
4 tablespoons demerara sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Method
Remove crust from bread and cut into abbout 1/4 inch thick slices. Cut these again into fingers, squares or fancy shapes.
Put the milk, butter, sugar and Ovaltine into a saucepan and heat gently. When the Ovaltine has dissolved, add the egg and whisk until well blended.
Now soak the prepared bread a few pieces at a time, in his mixture. Allow it to penetrate, but before the bread gets soggy, lift onto a plate to drain.
Place onto a well greased baking sheet.
Make the topping, melt the butter in a small pan, mix in cinnamon and sugar, spoon over the rusks.
Bake in a pre-heated oven 170 C , 325F, Mark 3, for 40 minutes. Then reduce heat to 150C, 300F, Gas Mark 2, turn slices over and bake for 20 minutes, Reduces heat again to 100C, 275F, Gas Mark 1, turn slices over again and return to oven for 20 minutes. They should be crisp while hot.
Decide how hard you want them, and then cool and serve.
These are a bit fiddly, but delicious!:T the recipe is in a book called "Waste not want not" that my Dad gave me years ago. Shows you how to use up your leftovers!:T

Thanks for the recipes, I made the ovaltine cake yesterday and forgot to put the sugar in! oops, needless to say it doesn't taste very sweet so I've 'recycled' it into a trifle along with a tin of black cherries (something along the lines of a black forest type thingie...)Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000
