Moneysaving tips on flights to NYC/Toronto?

I am looking to book some multi-stop flights and the best fare so far is with American Airlines (can anyone recommend them?).
I have had a look on the cashback sites (and tried the maximiser function on this site) and was hoping to get some moneysaving out of booking these flights somehow, as I'm spending a fair bit!!
Even if I can somehow get some airmiles, or points, or something out of these flights, that would be great!
Can anyone recommend a particular way of booking these, so that I get something out of it?!
