I'd recommend TKMaxx for a fair bit of kitchenware. Their knife sets seem very good value.

I'd recommend a set with a block. Too many knives and you end up putting them in a drawer where they'll get blunt rubbing on each other.

I have too many knives. If I was starting over I'd go for:-

    A Chef's knife (obviously)
A Bread Knife (only if you cut bread fairly often - but a good bread knife makes this a pleasure)
    A small paring knife

Then I'd possibly go for a japanese "santoku" knife (like a chef's knife, but better for vegtables imo) and a carving knife (because I appreciate having mine for cutting the roast)

In my opinion any decent drop forged (or japanese stamped) knife set will do the trick (look out for a lifetime gaurantee) and TKMaxx seem to offer quite a few sets from Global, Taylors Witness, Richardsons of Sheffield, Henckels (my personal favourite) and a few others. Look for one piece blanks (ie the knife blade and "tang" that goes into the handle are one piece) and make sure you get them out to see whther you like the grip and balance.

    Hope that helps.
  • You sound like you have the same idea I have. I'm planning on getting fewer but better quality knives and a decent sharpner. The knives I have at present aren't very good now and I end up having to saw at something to cut it up.

i got lucky, in the summer of last year when we had just completed on our 1st house, we attended a lot of car boots and country fairs.
I got a set of Anthony Warrell Thompson stainless steel knives in a wooden block (in the full packaging not used) for £10! so maybe you could keep your eye out...?
