I wouldn't trust the Ebay ones, nothing worse than cheap knives!

Does your daughter have a make in mind? I got a set of Sabatier cheap once in Debenhams - they sometimes reduce them to half price if there's a new packaging coming out, I think.

Ebay is actually quite a good place to look, but you need to have a particular make in mind rather than just trusting cheapo merchants who say that their goods are 'professional quality' (sorry helen81 - of course if you know anyone who has actually bought them and been pleased, that's another matter!)

I would ask her tutors. They will know what works well and is reasonably priced! Lots of these chefs sets are rubbish. She needs something that will last and sharpen well.

oooh sorry I don't have anything usefull to add but post what you eventually get if you are happy with them.

When we first moved out 6 years ago we brought some cheap kitchen knives from argos & we still have them but they are really really blunt these days - I either need a good sharpener or some decent knives but I think a decent set of knives would be the best way to go.

    Cheers,
    worto.

We have some excellent Sabatier knives which are French made, we've had them years - bought in a local catering wholesalers. Good knives tend to be heavier than the cheapies.
  • When I done my catering course 10 years ago we were recommended Victorinox. This is what the tutors suggested, light, great quality.
I am still using these same knives now and really comfortable with them, they are a great all rounder.
Think you can get them from Nisbets http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/ProductCategory.asp?topGroupCode=C2
You can also get the more expensive Global knives here too.

I can not recommend them enough!!! Just don't go to ebay for the cheap in-a-nice-box-set ones

My brother was a chef and said you never need every knife in a set. Just specific good ones. Try TK maxx, they have a load of quality knives of different types. Make up your own knife box or canvas roll, and go that way.... Get only high quality carbon steel

Richardson of Sheffield make some really damn good knives :)

they keep an edge like you wouldn't believe, and they're a really nice weight.
my current favourite knife at home.

I also have a set of Antony Warhal Thom..whatevers (short ginger beardy bloke) signature knives , and they are really nice too, take a very nice edge and handle very well.

I prefer Richardsons though, been using them for years and yet to be disappointed :)
