I've had an underactive thyroid for over 30 years and declare it each time when arranging travel insurance. Each time, with whatever company, I have been told, "Oh, that's fine, there is no loading for hypothyroidism".

Well, TomsMom, you have been luckier than I was. I had an annual worldwide policy with Norwich Union and when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I duly informed them. They insisted that I get a letter from my GP saying that I was fit to travel. That cost me £20.

Then when renewal rolled round, they excluded my existing medical condition. I am well aware that it is highly unlikely that hypothyroidism would cause me to have any kind of acute illness whilst abroad but I figured that they could well use it for an excuse if I had any other kind of illness or accident.

I now insure with Fortis. The annual worldwide policy costs me £78 per year. Not cheap but they do seem to be good. I had to make a claim last year following a nasty insect bite and they paid up promptly on my return to the UK.

An unpassed kidney stone, no treatment required at this stage

Seriously I would not want to travel like this without insurance. Been in Hospital 4 times this year with Kidney stones. 3 out of the 4 were not long after being the all clear by the doctors!
