are you obsessed

Options
is it just me or are all of you obsessed with saving money for over payments. hubby thinks im obsessed cause id rather stay in and save money than go out and spend it. im trying to save £40 a week for over payments so when hes home at weekend(he works away all week) he wants to spend money and i dont want to which results in arguments. i have told him im just trying to pay the debts off quicker but he just says that we should be enjoying being with kids. i dont spend anything all week other than the weekly shop and daughter goes dance classes. so how can i get through weekend without spending a fortune.

certainly am - and also proud of it!!

I'm very aware of the rising food prices at the moment and last night said to OH about a tin of something from Asda that was 9p (Smartprice something or other) and is now 20p a tin.

God, he said - you're sounding just like a pensioner!!!!

  • I was when I had my lightbulb moment back in January but I've relaxed a bit more now. Obviously I still want to save money where possible and also throw more than the minimum payments at my cards but I have promised myself and my OH that I will not let the debt consume me. At the end of the day you only get one life, and I intend to make mine enjoyable, and if that means spending an extra year paying my debts then i'm not going to stress over it too much.

I find that if you become too obsessive, its more likely that you will snap and just splurge... one treat every now and again helps keep me on the right track.

I too am obsessed with saving whilst my OH is in debt, but I keep our finances strictly seperate (and no kids).

What kinda stuff do you spend money on at weekends?

If it's eating out then make full use of two for one offers, vouchers (eat out for a tenner in The Times), check voucher codes on this website etc etc.

If it's babysitting can you join up with a friend, whereby you take it in turns to babysit for each other for free?

How about free stuff on weekends? Walks in parks? (If you're near London, therre's a great website for free days out, google 'free days out in London').

Check out liftshare.org to see if anyone is travelling for the day to the seaside and organise a lift?

Just a few ideas, hope they help.

i am also obsessed. but i have to say me and my daughter have lovely weekends in and out for very little money. we love the park, play centre, walks, woods, streams, seaside etc
also cinema on the weekend morning £1-£1.50 kids offer
    dvd's free from lovefilms.
to be honest we don't even notice a lot of the savings like hot water bottles instead of heating now we have been doing it a while

    I'm also obsessed!

I really enjoy it though, no longer do I waste money, I'm a smart consumer and I'm really proud of it. My other half thinks I'm nuts but he does like the look of our debts coming down
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

  • Yes, I'm debt free now & still obsessed, the obsession helped me pay £8,000 of my debt off in just over a year, & I had the whole argument thing too, as my Hubby is at sea, sometimes only for a couple of weeks, but when he was back he wanted to go out for meals etc, I felt annoyed that I'd live on the same amount for a week he wanted to blow on one meal, so I understand.
I don't know how much you have to pay off, but if it's not too long term, I'd be obsessed;) & then when you are debt free you will enjoy yourselves more as you won't resent spending the money, or feel guilty, if though, it will be a while, you need to have a life!! I really haven't had one for over a year, but that's the way I wanted to do it, it doesn't suit everyone.
    Good Luck
