Choose to refuse does not work on 08xx numbers?

Options
Hi,

We just phoned up BT Nuisance Calls line and asked about their "Choose to Refuse Service". This has been recommended by people on this board and in other articles.

BT just told us the service does not work on 08xx numbers. It only works on landline numbers.

Does anyone here have the choose to refuse service? Does it work on 08xx numbers?

Particularly interested in stopping Halifax calls!! They do NOT listen to us at all even though we have explained the situation about being on DMP with CCCS and also for them to communicate in writing.

    Hiya
Dont have the service, but wondered if you have caller display? that way you dont have to answer to anyoneif you dont recognise the number. Also you can register with a company called TPS, (telephone preference service) it is free, then you dont get any junk phone calls. However, you have to be really carefull as to when you register for other things online or post. Make sure you ALWAYS say no to marketing calls, promotional calls. TPS or any other company can not stop calls if you have agreed to them.

Oh and by the way, I have been told that if you ask companies to be removed from their database and stop the calls, they legally have to do so. Unless you have an account with them...
    hope this helps a little??

    Hi

Have you sent them this letter, if so, and they refuse to carry out your request, REPORT THEM:

    Your Address

    DATE HERE
    Company Name

    Dear Sirs

FORMAL COMPLAINT - Harassment by telephone

    Account Number: XXXXXXX

I am writing in relation to the quantity and frequency of telephone calls that I have received from your company, which I deem to be personally harassing.

I have verbally requested that these stop, but I am still receiving calls. (Delete if necessary)

I now require all further correspondence from your company to be made in writing only.

I am of the view that your continued harassment of me by telephone puts you in breach of Section 40 of the Administration of Justice Act 1970, and the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

If you continue to harass me by telephone, you will also be in breach of the Communications Act (2003) s.127 and I will report you to OFCOM, Trading Standards and The Office of Fair Trading, meaning that you will be liable to a substantial fine.

Be advised that any further telephone calls from your company will be recorded. (**Even if you don‘t yet have recording equipment!!**)
I request confirmation that my telephone details have beem removed from your databases.

    Yours faithfully,

    [NAME HERE]

OBTAIN THE NAME & ADDRESS OF THE CEO, AND SEND VIA RECORDED DELIVERY.

  • Thanks for you reply. This is not a marketing call. This is a debt collection call. Those won't be blocked with the TPS service (which we are registered with anyway)

And we do have a caller display. The problem is that they phone up to 10 times a day from 08:00 in the morning, including Saturdays and Sundays!!

We have already sent a complaint letter to them. They still have another 7 days or so to respond before we report them. It's actually for my other half, but she is now paying what she can afford via CCCS.

  • Hi, I too have been having loads of phone calls from halifax on both home and mobile, I have asked for them to stop and they havent. So I have got choose to refuse and it works on the 08708 503492 number that they keep ringing on, pity you cant do choose to refuse on the mobile tho. I am gonna do the letter of complaint recommended to the CEO, and hopefully they will take note and stop phoning. Hope this helps.

I have caller display and I just ignore the calls - it is a pain as I get calls starting at 8am sometimes. I'm getting to know the numbers now! I'm on a DMP with CCCS and if I do accidentally answer a call from a creditor or DCA, I don't go through the security questions but tell them I am on a DMP and give them my CCCS reference number and then hang up and not enter into conversation with them. I have written to the offenders asking them to stop and they haven't so I now make a note of the dates and times that they ring and will be writing complaints shortly. Good luck.

Halifax are notorious for harrassment - they have been successfully sued by a few people.

Like you, I asked them to stop - and I had it in writing that they would. But a few months later, as soon as they needed to contact me again - they phoned. I made a serious complaint and so far have not heard from them since. What did annoy me is that I sent 13 letters - yet it was only the 13th that they aknowledged - amazing as they were all sent to exactly the same address, it was just that I sent the 13th recorded so they couldn't get out of saying they received that one. I learnt my lesson - all correspondance to Halifax now sent recorded.

Have to say, I've had no problem with Halifax. Not heard from them since February (before I started my DMP) - maybe I've got it all to look forward to. My worst creditor for harrassement is Barclaycard/Mercers who call me at home, work and mobile even though I've sent them countless letters. They've got clever now and withold their number, send texts to my mobile pretending they are a "personal" call and asking me to call a number. I'm just making a note of it all so I can send a serious complaint.
