Is it possible to install a virgin+ box yourself or do they need to switch it on or something? I already have XL tv package which I believe means virgin+ is already included but cant afford the £75 for virgin to install one at the moment. Have seen a few on ebay so was wondering if I could get away with doing it myself?

The engineer just used the same cable when he installed mine and did nothing on the street at all to get it to work, not even before he turned up as he installed the wrong box to begin with and didn't even know that he should be installing virgin +0

your tv and internet comes through one fibre optic cable.
if you get another box your card might not work in it, they may have
to activeate it.

You need to activate the box and tune it in. If you ever had V+ installed you here them on the phone quoting your model number and then he waits for the operator to send a signal to the V+ box.
Simple answer....NO0 -
Also as you rent the equipment from Virgin not buy it the people on ebay selling the boxes are effectively selling stolen goods. Although it does cost a fair bit to have it installed the advantage of renting is that you're covered for any problems no matter how old it is.
BTW I've had it since the day it was launched as the TVdrive and we love it.It's my problem, it's my problem

Yup, and Virgin will not activate a box they have not supplied you directly.
IIRC they do "self install" for cable modems if you've already got a service from them (or need an upgraded modem), but again they supply the modem and won't activate any they haven't directly supplied you*.
Any sold on ebay won't be connected by virgin, and are likely to be either just illegal (still VM's property), or highly illegal (if they claim to allow "free" access).
As mentioned, you rent the box as part of your basic contract with VM, which means you have no (legal) incentive to buy a box, and any problems are dealt with free of charge by VM.
*8 or so years ago you could buy one from an approved supplier and then the engineer would hook it up etc (NTL as was didn't supply the modem at the time), but they stopped that years ago so it has to be supplied directly.0 -
if your out of contract just call them and tell them your leaving for Sky, when they ask why tell them your getting a better deal but would stay if they gave you a free V+ box.
You have to give 20 days notice anyway so you can always call back and cancel the termination notice0 -
Even if you don't get the free V+ box you should be able to get a hefty discount that will cover the cost of the box in a 3-4 months. When I phoned to say I was leaving I got btter TV and Phone packages and a discount. I think on my bill they show a customer loyalty discount of £24 a month.

Ive actually just entered a new contract after saying I was leaving for sky so cant do that for another year, never mind. Hopefully I can leave student life behind in a few months, find a job at my local hospital and get one direct from virgin.0
