Minimum dimensions downstairs loo

I am knocking down my garage and replacing it with a half garage/utility room and a downstairs toilet. I have been playing around with scale drawings but I am unsure how much room I should give to the toilet area. The layout will have to be toilet and sink side by side. I am worried that the room will be very pokey but I have never been in a house with a downstairs loo so I don't know what is acceptable in size. Any advise on dimensions would be very helpful. Thanks

Some downstairs I have worked in have been very small. Literally the width of the pan plus maybe 300mm either side, So probably 800 - 900mm in total for the width. The depth is dependent on whether you want the door to open inwards or not. If so allow enough rookm for the door to open without knocking on the pan. You could always use a cloakroom wall mounted wash hand basin which saves floor space. The most you are realisically looking at is probably no more than 2 square metres, if that.

    Hi,

You can look for the cloak room sizes toilet and basin on the web (consider the corner ones for space saving, and then use a design software and look for the best way to house them. I use the room planning software on: https://www.housetohome.co.uk

From experience we think best to leave about 70cm side-wise for toilet so one does not bang one's arms on the wall.

I've just put in a loo and a WHB in a blocked off hallway. The width is 1.1m and the depth 1.5m, which is quite spacious. I think the width could be reduced to about 1m and the depth to about 1.1m without making it too cramped.
Don't forget to factor in allowances for plumbing and fan/window.

To be space saving and environmental all at once how wbaout go for a toilet like this:

The water you wash your hands with fills up the cistern. This is an Australian website I found on a quick google search, but it is a good picture. Items like this should hopefully become a lot more common in the future. Not quite sure who might stock one in the UK, but I think I have seen them advertised somewhere.

That Australian loo is brilliant. Don't forget to leave enough room to clean round and behind the loo, if you're trying to stand on your head to clean round it, it will drive you mad. Also leave enough room to lean forward to allow you to er um wipe your ....... without banging your head on the door or wall!!
