Phone around and ask the cost of 1st test and the cost of retest if you remove the vehicle from the test station for repairs returning within 10 working days

The official line is that the 2nd test can be no more than half test fee - I think that means half the test fee charged, so if they charged £20 for 1st test, then the 2nd test should be no more than £10. But some of them offer free retests even if you remove the vehicle.

You do the maths, do you want to pay garage 'A' £50 and let them do repair work with no retest fee, or remove the vehicle and pay up to £25 for retest.
    OR
Do you want to pay garage 'B' £20 for 1st test and £10 for retest have work done elsewhere (in the process gaining a 2nd opinion on the work needing repair) - or let them do the work and have no retest fee.

I know which one I prefer.

I always find it cheaper to go to a Testing Station that will not carry out repairs.

You may have to pay £50 pounds for the test but you can rest in the knowledge that they are not looking for work for the Repair Bay.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Had mine done at Cardiff Council's testing station yesterday and it was only £40 which was cheaper than last year :)

Also the car passed and I am sure it would not have done at a garage interested in doing repair work.
