i have a video file thats 789MB on my computer and some blank dvds that are 120min recordable video or 4.7GB data. when i come to copy the file to the dvd, the programs i am using will only allow 700MB of dvd space to be used on the blank dvd. ive tried using nero, and a nero demo and a couple of other demos, but its always the same. any ideas?

Seems like your software is recognising the DVD disk as a CDrom, can you change a setting within the software?0

deffo sounds like the software is set to CD not DVD in nero you have the option to change from cd to dvd if using smart start, at the top of the box that opens change the setting to dvd, or if using nero buring rom when the "New compilation" box appears change to dvd on the top left hand side of that boxWelcome, rogerramjet.

If its old nero, it might not recoginse the DVD drive?
Oh and I REALLY apologise if this is patronising but.... you have got a DVD writer on your PC, not something like a CD writer DVD player combo??? (sorry sorry sorry)

Hmm the dratted beast still don't work. Is there a way of testing the dvd drive to see if it is broked?
And where is the best place to buy new burning software should I need it?

What is the max speed of your DVD writer? earlier ones will be 2 or 4 speed and would be either + or - R whereas newer ones are 8 or 16 speed and are usually +/- R.
Now if you have an older DVD writer there maybe a possibilty that you are using a + or - R disc with a DVD writer which is not compatable with the disc your using. for example one of my DVD writers will only recognise a -R disc whereas my other one will recognise both formats.Welcome, rogerramjet.
