Why are we all wasting our time answering what seems on the face of it a "wind-up",silly question.

    Thanks for nothing!

This was a genuine question which you have be-littled with your supposed wit!

The reason I hadn't 'got back on here' was because I was outraged by some of the crass comments some of you have made. This was a genuine question which I expected some genuine advice on. This is the first time I have used a forum like this and frankly the experience has put me off, even though most of the comments were really helpful and friendly. Thank you to all those who took this seriously.

It's a shame that you feel that your question wasn't addressed in an appropriate way by some members.

I think everybody who did reply was so astonished that your M-i-L would be so silly to even consider not declaring any medical conditions to her insurers.
I may be wrong here but I believe that that might make the whole of her policy invalid.
Insurance companies are always looking for ways of wriggling out of paying up and if your M-i-L lost or had something stolen, they may check her medical records and refuse the claim.
I'm sure if this is not right someone will put me right.

I just hope that she has since realised how crazy her plan to save £50 is.

Oh there's plenty of people stupid enough-Not just people who don't want to pay out excess premium (and yes an undeclared preexisting condition will invalidate the whole policy) but I've often booked people who claim they already have insurance or are taking out their own-then after something has happened come in asking if there is any way to take out a policy as they "forgot" or "didn't get around to it".
Don't get me started on the long list-like the 18 year old pregnant with twins who flew at 8 months pregnant to Benidorm in August with no insurance (would have been uninsurable anyway) and her babies had to be flown home with a nurse in an incubator. Never did understand THAT one-utter madness. Or the 8 year old whose father went on a bender in Florida (recovering alcoholic) and was committed. His child was alone in Florida as Dad (non custodial) refused permission for anyone to take his son home so the child had to wait 2 days in a hotel room until his mother could be flown out to get him. Choices were the holiday reps gave up their own time to stay with him in the room 24/7 (insurance and liability meant they couldn't take him anywhere)-or the state got involved and took him into care.
I worked on both those cases as the travel agent to the insurance company and I know of others just as bad.
I've heard of cases where people have had to remortgage or sell up just to pay medical bills . Holiday insurance is CHEAP !!
Part of the problem is that because we rarely see the real cost of medical treatment over here-most people have no idea that the simplest of treatment elsewhere can run into thousands-and that medical repatriation starts at thousands and can easily run into many times that.
I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

    MSE Florida wedding .....no problem
  • There are specialist insurers for complex medical cases where the premiums are not too bad and the insurance is valid. If you google preexisting medical conditions insurance then ring round for quotes.

I know of one relative who did that 25 years ago -it cost 23,000 in France and to Uk. A colleague did the same thing about 5 years ago -he nearly died was brought back by medical plane with staff =total cost was 48,000 for the flight-I know because their was a fund to contribute to help pay! For both these people it affected their future financial stability and in the case of the colleague he only got home because a kind relative put his house up as a bond to the bank and raised the funds initially.

    MIL are silly!
