In a right pickle with bank charges!!

Options
Last week we paid for a takeaway (i know, i know..) by cheque, but then £50 of bank charges were taken out and there wasnt any money in there for the cheque:eek: I kept checking online banking and the cheque still hadnt been put in so i thought if i put the money in on monday when oh got paid it'd be ok. Unfortunately i forgot when i was in town  and the cheque bounced yesterday anyway!
So now ill be charged £50 next month again, (£20 overdrawn, £30 bounced cheque) and i have to go into the takeaway place to give them their money and the £4 they said it costs them when a cheque bounces..At least it'll stop me paying by cheque again:rolleyes:
We are going onto a dmp though so wont have any money spare next month, i just dont know what we're going to do! Worse knowing its all my own stupid fault...

  • Hi bank charges are awful arnt they! I got charged a lot one month and i rang up the bank to tell them i couldnt manage the payments. They were very helpful and said they would wipe the charges this month but did give some advice that i should follow eg. dont use cheques or debit cards. Anyway i followed their advice and havnt had a bank charge since.:p

  • Sorry to bump up but really worried about this now. Ive had another cheque bounce so will be charged another £30 :( I wrote provident a cheque as oh forgot to get money out and the man said he wouldnt be able to cash it until after the bank holiday so i thought i had a little time. It would have had money in there the next day as I transferred money from ohs account to mine but although its gone from his account, its not in mine yet and the cheque has bounced :(
We're not going to be able to pay it at all as we're on a dmp from 1st june. I dont know what im going to do :(

Are wages paid into the account? If so i would open a new account smartish, so you will be starting from afresh. If the bank wont refund charges, get a letter in for charge reclaiming and see how far that takes you. The only other option at the moment is to include them in the DMP. You may need to re -arrange that, so i would ring them up on tuesday to see what they can do.
I have read in the past that the DMPS can be arranged a bit later in order to take account of changes, but that is just what i have read, i wouldn't take it as gospel.

  • Thanks bob, my tax credits are paid in there and i was thinking of them being put into ohs account for the time being until i can open another account. Although i could probably manage to get to a bank on tuesday.
When you say ring them do you mean the bank or cccs? Thanks x

Sorry i meant the cccs, but i would try the bank as well. Some are more sympathetic than others.
Explain everything you can to cccs, and see what they suggest. It may be that you start a bit later and just make token payments to creditors next month whislt sorting it out.
Just remember to get cracking on transferring money ASAP. With the tax credits you will have to give them notice about the money, not sure how much they require, but as it is a necessity i don't think the bank can take it off you..again that would need to be checked on.

I have mentioned to the bank many a time that i need the tax credits for food and it used to be for provident too but every time they said that didnt make a difference and took the charges anyway.
    Thanks x

Sorry to hear that, i thought that some of them would think like a human being sometimes and help out but hey treat them back the same.

Sometimes i read about stuff on the bank charges board, and they have different takes on this sort of situation. In amongst the self righteous mob there are some good suggestions, so it may be worth a mooch.

I was trying to catch up with your posts to see what the cccs had advised on the DMP. You don't actually seem to owe a great deal are you sure there is no other way than a DMP? Daft question i know, we all have our reasons just seemed a relatively small debt in comparison to a lot of other folks. Everyone copes differently with it! And i am a nosey sod.

    Im nosey too, dont worry:D
There doesnt seem another way, we just dont have enough money to pay all the creditors:rolleyes: Theres about 14 of them, i think we'd have managed ok if they would all be understanding and set agreements and stick to it! But they didnt want to know and the minimum payments and interest have gone up and up!

Gawd i am dumb, i blame the cold and early hoursof the morning. Was just trying to think of ways out for you etc.
I am sure then that a DMP is probably right for you and the best of luck with it. :D
Hope you are feeling better after the weekend and a little bit more settled.
