moral dilemma

I have been looking for a property for some time in the same area as a good friend. I viewed a property today in advance of it being listed to discover that my friend has also seen it too and is probably going to make an offer. What should I do - walk away even though it is just what I have been looking for, for the sake of the friendship, or act bullish. We are probably both very proceedable in the current climate, but I do not want to enter a bidding war with a friend!

  • Let your friend go for it, sit back, save, and be able to buy a far nicer place for the same money in 12 months time...

If its really a house that you want irrespective of your friends interest, personally, i would put in and offer but inform the friend as a matter of respect of the friendship. Know your ceiling limit and stick to it, dont get drawn into a bidding war.

    I dont envy your situation.

    good luck

Chat to your friend about it. If they are definitely putting in an offer then one of you may want to continue looking. The worst thing you could do is both put in an offer. Two bidders and the vendor will be looking for a higher price.

I would walk away allowing the first to view the chance of bagging a deal. Once they know two are interested it's unlikely the best deal will be made.

Yes, that would be an even worse situation. I could lose the friendship and line the vendor's pockets!
  • I think it depends how much you want it and how much you need to move right now, or whether you can hang on. Chances are there will be another house you would like to live in over the next few months!

Who viewed it first? Suppose if fair is fair, first to view should get first dibs.

Whatever happens, be open with your friend about it. Tell them you really like it too and would consider offering. See what they say. Not discussing it will only jepoardise your friendship.
